Proposition 8 is a ballot initiative before California voters that would protect traditional marriage, a union between one man and one woman. The 14 words that define Prop 8 are: only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California. Those opposed to Prop 8 would have Californians believe that this issue is about equality, tolerance, and diversity.
As far as equality is concerned, same sex union couples have the same legal rights as traditionally married couples. Rights between both sets of people are equal in the workplace, in hospitals, in estates and in wills etc. Yet, for the opponents of Prop 8 this is not enough.
God did indeed create us all equal. He created us in his own image. He created us male and female, each with unique characteristics that when combined together form the perfect balance. Traditional marriage has been a union of one man and one woman before the world was, since its creation (lets hear it for Adam and Eve- our first parents), and it will be for all time. This is God’s law. He created the world and He created its inhabitants. We cannot create a civil law that goes against God’s laws without serious repercussions. He rules the universe!
While the opposition states that it does not seek to educate school children on same-sex unions, calling proponents of Prop 8 “liars” for stating such, the actions of the opposition clearly display the exact opposite to be true. For example, Gavin Newsom, a California mayor, called Proposition 8 ads “classic distraction” and “misleading” according to the Los Angeles Times. The irony is that a mere 10 days later Mayor Newsom performed a same-sex marriage for a teacher and her partner. The teacher’s first-grade students attended the event (I had a reference here but blogger won't accept the "tag"). This is not the way I want my children to learn about tolerance.
In Massachusetts where same-sex marriage has been legalized, a second-grade boy came home from school to tell his parents about a “silly” story his teacher read to him. The boy went on to tell his parents that it was about a prince who married a prince and thus they lived as the king and the king (again, I have a reference for this too but blogger won't accept the "tag"). This is not the way I want my children to learn about diversity.
Prop 8 is not about judging anyone or any couple. It is simply about taking a stand – a stand to protect marriage as it has been and always will be. It’s an eternal law. Changing the definition of marriage civilly will have unforeseen consequences not just in California, not just in the United States, but also in the world at large.
